Background to the Trust
The Ecology matters trust has grown from Ecology Matters Ltd which was established as a not-for profit ecological consultancy with the charitable aims: “To further conservation through the provision of high quality ecological research, survey and advice”. (from Ecology Matters Ltd M&As)
Profit from commercial consultancy work is spent on conservation projects. The company grew out of the Directors realisation that funds for ecological conservation research were becoming ever more difficult to obtain, following cuts to funding of many Government grant aiding bodies, and a move within these to funding social rather than ecological work. Research and monitoring work is vital to inform conservation activities, and yet very little funding is currently available for this purpose. It was also hoped to raise additional funds from other trusts and grant making bodies. However, it has been found that most grant making bodies will only grant aid other registered charities. In addition there have been problems obtaining money from Government sources due to the confusion between commercial and non-commercial work. The Directors of Ecology Matters Ltd therefore decided to set up a trust fund, into which any commercial profits would be donated, and to set this up as a charity with independent trustees.
‘The Ecology Matters Trust’
The Trust was established in 2007, and received charitable status in July of that year. (Charity number 111913)
Its objectives are:
“To promote the conservation of the physical and natural environment through undertaking and promoting research into causes of biodiversity declines and ecological processes and educating people into those causes by publication of research”.
It meets these objectives by undertaking and promoting research into causes of biological declines and ecological processes and educating people by publication of research.

Income:
The Trust receives an annual donation from Ecology Matters Ltd of profits, other than those required for re-investment in the Company. It is also intended to apply to other Trusts and Funds for grants towards specific projects.
Grants:
The Trust does not currently grant aid any external projects and cannot accept any requests for funding.
